Vehicle Selection Considerations

Written by GreenKey on September 23, 2008

With today’s increased focus on carbon reduction, it’s possible to save money and the environment at the same time. Modifying current vehicle selectors is a great starting point in the movement to go “green”.

Unless required by business application needs, engine downsizing has a great potential for a reduction in fuel spend and emissions. Consider that an average V6 light duty truck with an EPA fuel economy rating of 15 mpg will spend roughly **$ 6,400 dollars over 25,000 miles, while an I4 light duty truck with an EPA fuel economy rating of 17 will spend only roughly ** $ 5,600; that’s a savings of almost $800 and a carbon emission reduction of more than 3,800 lbs of CO2. Yes, in some cases a larger engine is needed in order to complete the job, but when not demanded by the business applications turn to the smallest engine and lowest drive train.

While the potential to use hybrid or even alternative fuel vehicles aren’t always an option, modifying your current vehicle selectors can help you to realize not only a dramatic decrease in fuel spend, but a reduction in carbon emissions.

** uses National Average fuel price of 3.83 for the week of 9/15
